		<description>Tochail / to Dig
Tochail was a creative research artist residency which is part of the wider Creative Places Project. This took place in December 2024 and January 2025.
I worked inland in the Gaeltacht Uíbh Ráthaigh (Dromaid area of the Iveragh peninsula). As an embedded artist I lived with the community and used formal and informal creative methodologies to engage with local residents on the topic of the rural housing crisis. Two other residencies ran in parallel we worked with Cumas Ceantar Uíbh Ráthaigh and the TASC (Think Tank for Action &#38;amp; Social Change)
https://www.tasc.ie/news/2025/02/18/artists-residencies-in-the-south-kerry-gaeltacht-identify-ho/
The TOCHAIL residencies underscore the power of creativity in tackling urgent social issues. The innovative approach applied in the Iveragh Gaeltacht offers a replicable model for other communities across the island of Ireland facing similar challenges.&#38;nbsp;As discussions around rural housing continue, policymakers, agencies and community development practitioners are encouraged to engage with this innovative model and explore its potential for broader implementation.

The research findings will directly inform TASC's People’s Transition project in the Gaeltacht, which explores the development of social and economic interventions to contribute to a more egalitarian climate transition process for the people of Iveragh. The launch of the Uíbh Ráthaigh People’s Transition report is set to take place in April.

Rinn AunThis exhibition, funded by the Design &#38;amp; Crafts Council of Ireland, showcases artist Susan Leen’s process of designing her artist book, Rinn Aun – The Place of the Tide, highlighting how art and design create opportunities for connection, understanding, and change. The book examines the neighbourhood of Ringsend and its relationship with its maritime environment. Leen’s project uses letterpress typography and linocut designs to portray the stories and memories of local inhabitants and the present-day situation of the bay area, collected through weeks of interviews. The book is printed letterpress on the National Print Museum’s Vandercook No. 4 and bound using traditional techniques.
The exhibition will be in the National Print Musuem from November 12th - February 1st.

The book and a limited edition of prints are available to buy in the National Print Musuem or by contacting: susanleen@gmail.comhttps://www.nationalprintmuseum.ie/product/rinn-aun-the-place-of-the-tide-by-susan-leen/
Exhibition text
Rinn Aun – the place of the tide
Introduction

Artist Susan Leen has often found inspiration for her work in narratives of placemaking and how topography affects and creates culture. This interest led her to investigate the geography of nearby Ringsend, its maritime culture and biosphere.Through research and informal interviews with local residents, a picture emerged of a location with an intrinsic connection to its sea life, whose communities are striving to overcome ecologic issues that have threatened this connection. Leen chose to
create a linocut and letterpress printed book to portray this complex relationship and celebrate the rich maritime culture of Ringsend.

Making the book

“I chose the book form as a medium to respond to the area and the research I had
undertaken, distilled to a series of expanding narrative images between figuration
and abstraction. The project echoes the emerging mindset of the Symbiocene,
where humans exist in harmony with nature, a new way to talk about our climate
crisis in a manner that empowers people and builds capacity for future generations.
I prepared the illustrated panels for my book by hand-carving lino sheets, inspired by
the characteristics of Dublin Bay’s biosphere. Accompanying the visuals are a series
of haiku. The haiku form, with its emphasis on nature and the economy of words,
appealed to me, as did the exercise of reducing something as multifaceted as a
place to its most basic elements. The type is set by hand in Rockwell, and both the
type and linocut illustrations are printed on the National Print Museum’s Vandercook
no. 4 cylinder press.
I handbound the book, creating the covers using Fabriano no. 5 paper and archival
materials. The concertina format evokes the notion of movement and change in the
area, with one side representing the historical reality and the other representing the
contemporary situation.
The thread running through this exhibition and book project is one of community,
beginning with the Museum where I learned to set type and operate the Vandercook
press, to the wider community of people I spoke to about the project and who helped
me gather stories, to those who assisted me with writing the haiku and bookbinding.”
– Susan Leen

Ringsend and the sea

Before the North and South Walls were built to create a safe entry to Dublin Port,
Ringsend was a thin sand bank formed by the tidal waters of the rivers Dodder and
Liffey. Evidence of its relationship with the local sea life is scattered throughout the
historical record; the listing of fish as a permissible unit for church donations in 1546;
the local women who harvested Poolbeg oysters and sold them in the Dublin
markets in the 18 th century; the 1892 founding of the Pembroke Technical and
Ringsend Fishery School; Joyce’s depiction in Ulysses of Ringsend as a place of
‘wigwams of brown steersmen and master mariners.’
The placenames of Ringsend also demonstrate this heritage – most directly its Irish
name, Rinn Aun, ‘the place of the tide.’ The area also earned the nickname
‘Raytown’ due to the abundance of stingrays and their role as a food staple for
fishermen who sold off their more valuable catch.
With the desertion of the herring shoals from Dublin Bay by the turn of the century,
the dredging of Dublin port in 1903, and the domination of new steam trawlers in the
area, Ringsend began to be untethered from its maritime identity and access to the
sea. Pollution largely emptied the area of its once-eponymous stingrays, and fishing
activities re-centred in Howth.
Today, geo-engineering experiments strive to protect the Dublin Bay biosphere. The
Nautical Trust was established in 1996 to ensure the passing on of knowledge and
skills, encouraging young people to imagine a future in the maritime sector. The
Trust’s director, Jimmy Murray, pilots the Liffey Sweeper, a vessel designed to collect
non-natural debris from the Liffey, the Dodder and the Tolka Estuary. Thanks to these
efforts, the ecosystem is improving, and the long-absent herring miraculously
returned to Dublin Bay two years ago. There is great hope that the centuries-
spanning relationship of the Ringsend community with its sea life will be preserved
for future generation

 Échaffodage/Scaffold

Drawing from the writings of French philosopher Bachelard, I created a scaffold as a meditation on the nature of human construction in the natural world, and the tensions that may exist within this. The ‘piece-meal’ fabrication of the local building work referred to in Dr. Ruth Mc Manus’ research was of interest to me, this contrast in the formal and man-made quality of the developments. A quote from September 1925 in Ruth’s research, when land in Drumcondra was being acquired for social housing, was also at the forefront of my mind. ‘At present one may as well try and live in an aeroplane as to get a vacant house in Dublin’. This phrase is proof of this eternal desire to have a home and all the emotions invested in this. The work is cut by hand on Fabriano paper, the fragility of the large-scale paper cut-out is in contrast to the solidity of scaffolding and building materials.Cregan library, DCU, St.Patricks Campus - solo exhibition River &#38;amp; Ridge

		<description>Tolka
Tolka River, Dublin, Ireland

The river was part of my focus during my Artist in Residency period at Dublin City University, where I researched the local geography in response to research by Dr. Ruth Mc Manus.&#38;nbsp;
Tolka, its name deriving from the word flood, gives the river a sense of foreboding. Having had its trajectory changed it proves a dynamic element in the make-up of the local topography. Using the Japanese art of suminagashi or ‘floating ink’ I took ‘imprints’ of the Tolka, recording its movement and flow at a particular part of the river on a particular day and from these created a series of screen prints rendering still a moment of the river’s movement.

		<description>Beds

This modular installation in stonware clay was made during my time as artist in residence in DCU. I made this work in response to research by historical geographer Ruth Mc Manus on the Drumcondra area. The brickwork is one of the most striking aspects of the built fabric of the area. On one of our initial exchanges, Ruth Mc Manus spoke to me about a thumbprint on a brick in Belvedere House.Beds is both a reference to current housing situation and to brickmaking terminology. The bed of the Berkley House brick was laid the wrong way revealing the bricklayers thumbprint. In a nod to the former Drumcondra Quarry I modelled bricks by hand in stoneware clay. As a material response to this the bricks were fired and painted to create this free-standing modular brick installation.

Some things thrive in damp climates

This series took it’s inspiration from the micro geography of flower beds and orchards where Ninian Niven worked, as well as the notebooks of Mary Delany credited as being the creator of collage at age 72. Inspired by botanical illustrations from the time, I’ve utilised mesh and grids, due to my fascination with mapping and the

human activities of weaving and fabric making, important industries in Drumcondra in the past. The title is drawn from a comment made by geograpger Ruth Mc Manus while I lamented the Irish weather.
This series formed part of a body of work I created in DCU as part of my artist residency.

Exhibited in Cregan Libray, solo exhibition: River &#38;amp; Ridge

NanterreRails is a series of handmade cut outs depicting the rail lines in and around Paris. I was inspired by the organic form of the railway network and created this series of installation pieces. The work is made of fabriano paper, handcut to evoke fragility, it considers the current socio-economic situation of the french rail network and considers its potential privatisation in the future.
